ANI1107 Character Performance

Final Character Performance piece: Merlin waking up Arthur

This is my final piece. Looking back on the project it was really fun to animate, and i did have a bit of trouble animating the character movements. If i had to do it again, I would probably focus more on the body language and try to get the lip sync more accurate.
Initially at the start of this project I did have trouble animating the mouth to a piece of dialogue, but overall it turned out really well in the end.

Animatic review

Looking back on my animatic piece and the formative feedback I had, it wasn't really clear on where my camera angles should be as it looked really flat and one dimensional.
I also felt that rather than having Arthur lying in the bed, I'd have him lying down on a sofa, making it easier to manipulate the camera angles a lot better and it also means i don't have to try and animate any fabric.

Animatic

This is my rough animatic for my character performance piece.

Performance breakdown

In one of our lessons we had a brief introduction in acting. We learnt about Stanislavski (inside-out) theory and Laban (outside-inside) theory.

Given circumstances: Apart from the actual dialogue, the setting, with Arthur lying on the bed and Merlin waking him up.
Research: Merlin is a British fantasy-adventure programme. It's loosely based on the Arthurian Legends and focuses on the relationship between Merlin the young wizard and Arthur Pendragon.
Though this programme is based on old legends, the performance piece I've chosen has allowed me to put a contemporary twist on it. Instead they are room mates and Merlin is trying to wake up Arthur for something important.
Super objective: Merlin trying to wake up Arthur.
Objective: Merlin trying to wake Arthur up in different ways. Arthur wants to lie in.
Obstacles: Arthur refusing to get up.
Beats: Merlin wakes up Arthur, Arthur doesn't want to wake up and tells Merlin more or less to wake him up in a different way, then Merlin jokingly wakes him up in different ways, but he stalls, Arthur looks at Merlin condescendingly and throws an object at him.
Subtext: Majority of Merlin's action is very upbeat and happy, he only wants to wake up Arthur. Arthur is very disgruntled and refuses to co-operate, so he more or less lies still.

Lip Syncing

This is my first lip sync that I've done, animating the phrase; "Are you alright there Phil?"

For my first attempt at animating a lip sync piece, it was a little bit challenging but, overall very fun. I believe i need to work on my timing a bit more, so the character doesn't open his mouth when there is no speech.

To create a piece of lip sync, you use 3 passes. Pass 1 is the up and down movements for the mouth, Pass 2 is the narrowing or width of the mouth and Pass 3 is usually the detail of the tongue and teeth, I learnt this from the Muppet theory that I looked into.

We learnt how to animate dialogue by squashing and stretching the face into the right shape that is required for the letter.

Character Performance piece

I've chosen to do this scene from the TV show 'Merlin', because in this short clip they express a lot of funny emotions, which will be fun to animate, along with dialogue.

Morpheus Rig

This term we are working on creating and animating characters to a piece of dialogue of our choice.
The first week we looked at the Morpheus Rig, which we'll be using to model our characters with.

This is what the normal rig looks like without any modifications and changes.

Underneath are the characters that I morphed and posed.
